We Have a Mosquito Problem in My Backyard

So we have a mosquito problem in my backyard. Not a cute one. The kind where you step outside with a toddler and come back in with bites on both of you, which is how I ended up with the ForceField Natural Mosquito Yard Treatment in my hands instead of another spray bottle.

It’s granules. You spread it around on the ground, that’s the whole job. No hose attachment, no mixing, no gloves. I went along the side of the backyard and laid it down on the ground as I walked.

What’s Inside a Natural Mosquito Repellent Like This

Essential oils on a corn-husk base, no DEET. The blend is geraniol, lemongrass, citronella and cedarwood, and the carrier is sustainable corn-husk cellulose that’s dyed so it disappears into soil and mulch instead of sitting there looking like cat litter.

That matters more than it sounds. A liquid natural mosquito yard spray has to be reapplied after rain and you’re waiting for the lawn to dry before anyone walks on it. Granules just sit in the grass and keep doing their thing. That’s the trade: slower to kick in than a fogger, far less of a production to apply.

14 Days, Then You Refill

It’s supposed to last you up to 14 days and then you can refill. That’s the rhythm you’re buying into, and it’s worth being clear about: this isn’t a one-and-done season treatment. Two weeks, reapply, two weeks, reapply.

The 3 lb jug gets stretched or burned through depending entirely on your yard. At 2 to 4 cups per 100 square feet, a small patio area goes a long way. A full lawn will not.

Spreading It Along the Fence Line and the Door

I walked the perimeter first, going all the way along the side of the backyard and putting it down on the ground as I went. That’s where the mosquitoes hang out in my yard, in the shade along the edge, not in the middle of the open grass.

Then I spread a little bit around the door area, which I’d call the smartest five seconds of the whole application. That’s the spot where they follow you inside.

How much you use depends on the size of your backyard. You can always spread out a little bit more, and just read the instructions, because eyeballing it is how you run out halfway down the fence. The label gives you cups per 100 square feet for a reason.

The smell lands closer to a lemongrass candle than a pesticide, cedar-forward, warm, not sharp. It’s strong enough that you notice it standing over the freshly spread line, then it settles within a few minutes into something genuinely pleasant rather than something you’re waiting to dissipate. If you’re sensitive to strong essential oils, go lighter near the door, because the doorway is where the scent carries indoors the most.

Pet Safe Doesn’t Mean Pet Proof

The pet-safe claim is the whole reason I picked this over a conventional yard spray. With three dogs and a toddler, anything I put on the grass will be walked on, sniffed, and sat in within minutes of application, there’s no realistic lockout window. That’s the problem this solves, and it’s what separates it from a cheaper chemical option I’d have to fence off for hours.

Where people get this wrong: “pet safe” is written as safe for pets and livestock when used as directed. It’s not an invitation to let a dog eat it. Spread it the way the label says, at the stated rate, and you’re inside the lines. Dump a pile of it in one spot because you’re rushing and you’ve left something a curious dog will investigate. My application was deliberate and thin for exactly that reason.

Where Granules Fall Short

Granules protect the ground, not the air five feet above it. If your mosquitoes are coming off standing water, a clogged gutter, or a neighbor’s yard, treating your own lawn only does part of the work. This is a barrier, not a force field, name notwithstanding.

The 14-day limit is also the reapplication window. Fourteen days is the ceiling, not a promise, and heavy rain, mowing, or a wind-exposed yard will shorten it. A hard-chemical treatment gives you longer gaps. This one asks for more attention in exchange for being something I’ll let my kid and my dogs walk through.

Would I Refill It?

Yes, because the thing I wanted was a yard treatment I didn’t have to supervise my household around. The application is easy, the smell is pleasant rather than something you flee from, and the DEET-free formula means nobody has to stay off the grass while it works.

If you want one treatment that lasts a month, this isn’t it, and at the two-week refill cadence the cost adds up fast across a full summer. But if the reason you haven’t sprayed your yard yet is three dogs and a toddler, this removes that specific obstacle, DEET-free, no lockout period, and nothing that looks alarming on the label. For that household, it’s not just worth trying, it’s the right call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does rain wash the granules away?

Heavy rain will shorten the 14-day window, so plan a reapplication after a real storm. Light watering is less of an issue since the corn-husk base settles down into the soil and mulch rather than sitting on top of the blades.

Does it work on anything besides mosquitoes?

Yes, it’s sold as a flea, tick and mosquito yard treatment and also deters stable flies and chiggers. That’s the listing’s claim, not something I measured in my own yard, so treat mosquitoes as the main job and the rest as bonus coverage.

Can I use it around a chicken coop or barn?

It’s rated for livestock and barn areas including coops and stables, plus patios, pool areas and refuse containers. The same “as directed” rule applies: spread it at the stated rate rather than piling it where animals feed.

Will the granules show up in my mulch beds?

Barely. They’re dyed to blend into soil and mulch, which is why I was comfortable running them along the landscaping edge. On short, light-colored gravel you’d notice them more than on dark mulch.
